How You Can Cool a Big House Without Using Ducts

Oh dear. You’ve got your eyes set on a nice old home that is within your budget and suits your needs and desires perfectly. There’s only one problem. It is not set up with a central air conditioning system, and you have no interest in dealing with hauling window units around before and after each hot summer season. Guess the hunt for the perfect home continues, eh? Actually, there is another option to consider.

With a ductless mini split HVAC system, you don’t need air ducts at all in order to enjoy whole-house cooling—or heating, for that matter, but more on that momentarily. Before we go any further, let us just remind you that even the best ductless system is going to fail to impress if not installed and serviced by a skilled, trained professional. That is why you should choose to work with our team.  We’re the HVAC company in Syracuse, IN, that you can trust for a job well done.

How Does Ductless Cooling Work?

A ductless mini split system doesn’t use air ducts but also doesn’t rely on window units to cool the house. So what exactly does that system entail? Well, ductless systems do use a single outdoor unit, much like a traditional split central air conditioning system. However, it also uses individual, wall-mounted blower units installed throughout the house. These operate in place of centralized air ducts, and this design has much to offer.

First of all, ductless mini splits are ideal for retrofits. If you don’t have ductwork, then they can be easily installed in existing properties. They’re also great for renovations and/or additions. Ultimately, though, their high efficiency levels and versatility make them perfect for any scenario. The refrigerant evaporates in the indoor units, drawing heat out of the air in the rooms in which they’re installed.  That refrigerant then condenses outdoors, allowing for that heat to be released. All that connects the indoor and outdoor components is a simple conduit containing power and refrigerant lines.

Because there is no ductwork, there is no risk of energy loss through duct leaks. And because you can control each indoor unit independently of the others, you can save energy by cooling only those areas of your home that you choose, and only as much as you choose. This, along with the ease of installation, is a major benefit of the ductless system.

Oh—It’s a Heater, Too

That’s right. Ductless mini splits are heat pumps, and that means that they can heat your home as well as cool it. Not only that, but ductless mini splits are able to heat with incredible efficiency thanks to their heat pump technology. They can reverse their refrigerant cycle to remove heat from the air outside. Then, the refrigerant is compressed to boost thermal energy and is released indoors. No new heat is created, and you enjoy effective home heating with minimal expense!
