Heating Season: Preparing for Winter

Heating season is right around the corner, and we think it’s time for a check-in. As your local HVAC company, we’re always wondering how your HVAC system is doing as it gets ready to heat your home. We’re not talking about how it’s feeling, but whether or not any attention has been paid to it this year. Heating is vital where we live, so making sure that your heater is ready to go can sometimes make all the difference.

There are some simple things that homeowners can do to make sure their heater is in good shape for the months to come. If you’re not up to the task of checking your system yourself, you’re not alone! That’s what your local HVAC professional in Plymouth, IN is for! We can change filters and check your system for any bumps and bruises before it really gets cold out.

Though, if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, why not read on and see what you can do to help your heater!

How to Prepare

Preparing your heating system isn’t as difficult as you might think. Of course, most service professionals have a much more thorough checklist when preparing a heater for winter. So, if the following solutions don’t seem to get the job done, you can always give us a call.

  • Change Air Filters. Your heater’s air filters being dirty could decrease the efficiency and effectiveness of your system. Make sure you check whether or not your air filters need to be replaced completely, or if the filter requires some simple cleaning before being inserted back in.
  • Test the igniter switch. A furnace or boiler without a functioning ignition is basically useless. Make sure your system can actually turn on before winter comes around in full swing.
  • Clean around the furnace or boiler. Your heating system, whether you like it or not, is a controlled fire. Just like any fire, this can be cause for a hazard if there is any flammable debris around it. It’s always a good idea to sweep and clean around your furnace before turning it on so that nothing is within burning distance of the heater.
  • Schedule a Heating System Tune-Up. If none of the above tips are helping your heater prepare for winter, perhaps there’s something much worse going on with it. With a professional service technician on the case, you can be sure we’ll pinpoint the exact issue in time to address it before the winter comes.

Don’t Hesitate

The most important part of this is the “before winter” part. Checking on these heating specifics when temperatures are below freezing is less than ideal. As with most things in life, timing is key. So get your hands dirty and start replacing those filters, testing those switches, and cleaning around the furnace! For everything else, give us a call and let us take a more thorough look to see what’s going on—and more importantly, get you ready for winter.
