air-fliter-cu

In our last post, we went over a few steps to take before your air conditioning system in Fort Wayne, IN gets down to the serious work of handling the summer heat. One of the most important of those steps is changing the HVAC air filter for a clean one. A clogged filter causes a slew of problems, from increases in utility bills to a drop in airflow through the ventilation system. It can even cause the AC to trip a circuit breaker.

But we only spent a paragraph on the air filter in that post. Here, we’d like to go into greater detail and offer some tips for the proper care of the air filter.

Keeping Safe with Your Furnace in the Winter

Monday, December 11th, 2017

gas-furnace-burners-interiorLast winter we posted some steps to take to make sure your home’s natural gas furnace runs as safely as possible over the cold months. We’d like to run through a quick reminder of these steps before we talk a bit more about furnaces, safety, and you:

  • Professionally maintain the furnace: We can never stress this too much. If you haven’t yet arranged for annual maintenance through our HomeSaver’s Club, contact us right away. This inspection and tune-up is vital for a safe furnace.
  • Clear the area around the furnace: Don’t have anything combustible near the furnace.
  • Set up CO detectors: An essential early-warning system if toxic gases start escaping from a damaged furnace.
  • Stay on top of repairs: Never hesitate to contact us for furnace repairs if something seems wrong.

More Furnace Safety Talk

Whenever we bring up tips for gas furnace safety, we want to reassure homeowners that a furnace is not an automatically dangerous appliance. Modern furnaces are manufactured to high safety standards, and they include many precautions to prevent problems such as carbon monoxide leaks and combustion hazards. For example, the furnace limit switch will shut the system off if the temperature inside rises too high. If you purchase a furnace with the ENERGY STAR label, you’ll know you have a heating system that meets rigorous safety qualifications. (ENERGY STAR is about more than energy efficiency!)

How a Dehumidifier Helps in the Summer

Monday, July 10th, 2017

woman-in-front-of-fan-hand-on-headHigh humidity is a common comfort problem people experience during the summers here in Northern Indiana. High relative humidity levels make hot days feel even hotter, but there are other troubles that high humidity can cause when it occurs inside a home, from illness to building damage.

If you’re dealing with high humidity problems in your home, the best solution is to have a whole-house dehumidifier installed. You can purchase portable dehumidifiers, but not only are these limited in how effective they are (you don’t really want to drag the unit from room to room, do you?) they can also present fire hazards. It’s easy to enjoy a whole-house dehumidifier in Fort Wayne, IN: you only need to contact our experienced indoor air quality team and arrange to have one installed.

How to Change Your HVAC System’s Air Filter

Monday, November 21st, 2016

If you use a furnace or a heat pump to provide warmth to your home during the winter, it has an air filter on it that needs some special attention over the season. This filter isn’t designed to clean the air (we have plenty of options to help your home with air quality if you need help with that). What it does is protect the interior of the heater from the debris that flows in through the return air ducts. Over the winter months, a great deal of dust, lint, dander, and other particles will become trapped in the filter. The congestion will reach the point where the filter will no longer be able to “breathe” and this can cause multiple problems:
